“We will not be free from the darkness until we open our eyes.”

Who is Shawn?
Hello, I am a gifted individual.
A mother, student, and analyst of all I am able to process.
I enjoy reading, music, community building, and being a representation of all the prayers, pride, joy, and knowledge that was poured into making me who I am today.
In 2025, I became an author of a book giving a brief introduction into my family tree. As a 29 year old Black American, I noticed the vigor and enthusiasm to trace one’s genealogy had been traded for the academic summarization of Black history. No need to look just read one of those books. My issue is not with academia, my issue is with the blind assimilation to be whatever the educated and uneducated believed us to be. I noticed centuries of context and terrain fade to (b)lack, a color. I knew an ethnonym was not just a color. “Culture is practiced by a People.” My People, Black people, Black Americans with a capital b to denote a noun, are much more than a German-born construct, or a lost group in search of a diaspora. Frankly, I believe my ethnic group to be amongst neither. Black American culture is a breathing, living, loving, and waiting to be prioritized spiritual connection. Amen.
